A Dilbert-esque CEO gets his comeuppance. He sent out an email memo which said, “We are getting less than 40 hours of work from a large number of our K.C.-based EMPLOYEES … you have a problem and you will fix it or I will replace you… NEVER in my career have I allowed a team which worked for me to think they had a 40-hour job.” Naturally it was widely circulated and his company’s stock price dropped 22 percent…

According to the NYT, “he said, he wanted to promote discussion. He apparently succeeded, receiving more than 300 e-mail responses from employees.” I wish I could have read some of those!

Americans ‘think hands and feet will fall off’ if they visit UK (and contract foot and mouth) – the mind boggles…

BBC News – UK behind in broadband race It seems that in a survey of 11 countries the UK is behind every one but France. We have 3% of households connected compared with 11% of US households. To my surprise France appears to be the winner in Europe with 6%. Unsurprisingly, “in a recent survey, Oftel found that the UK’s services were more expensive to the consumer than in Germany, France and the US.”

It’s an ill wind… I’m just back from Cuba (wonderful – more info will be available when I get my web journal sorted out). I had my minidisc player stolen there – this was a nuisance but it gave me a chance/excuse to upgrade to a new Sharp portable MD.
