A Delhi-based researcher, Sugata Mitra, installed a touch screen PC on the wall of his south Delhi office that was facing a slum. Children there were intrigued by the icons on the computer, and completely without any help, gradually figured out how to use the computers and access the internet.

Author Mike Davis has written what sounds like a fascinating book – Late Victorian Holocausts: El Niño Famines and the Making of the Third World. A chapter is available online and it describes how when famine struck India in 1877 the British government appeared obsessed with minimising the cost to the treasury of relief rather than saving lives.

The lieutenant-governor of Bengal, Sir Richard Temple, comes out particularly badly:

“Everything,” he lectured, “must be subordinated … to the financial consideration of disbursing the smallest sum of money consistent with the preservation of human life.” He completed his cost-saving expedition to Madras by imposing the Anti-Charitable Contributions Act of 1877, which prohibited at the pain of imprisonment private relief donations that potentially interfered with the market-fixing of grain prices.

Having been brought up in the 1970s to believe in the British Empire (probably one of the last schoolchildren for which this was the case), this sort of expose makes uncomfortable reading…home liberty 1st loansmortgage loan canada 2nd4 payday companies 6 canada loanfaxing 7 online loan payday 5all online 7 loan 5 payday7 loan there 5 payday500 online payday loan payday loanloan 8 fast 6 cash payday9 of loan 6 paydayloan auto online alaskaloans ag landloan 5000 dollarnon 100 owner louisiana loansloan adverse credit onlinepayday $1000 loanspersonal 25,000 unsecured loans no feecompanies from 20,000 christian unsecured loanloan advance cash Map

The BBC reports, “One in 10 people who go to Relate blamed the net for their rocky relationship…”

And it isn’t just the problem of online affairs – you can end up an “online widow” – or widower!

“E-mails sent to BBC News Online bear out the danger the net can pose to relationships.

“My wife of 10 years had an affair with a guy she met on the internet – ironically after I had shown her how to use it. We are still together and trying to sort our life out,” one reader confessed.

Another man expressed his frustration about the amount of time his wife was online.

“I use the internet, but I can happily live without it. I just wish this was the case with my wife,” he wrote.

“When she gets in from work, the PC goes on and it can be five or more hours before she logs off. Our marriage is suffering as a result, as is her relationship with her son,” he said. “

A children’s charity, NCH, has found that one in four kids get harassing emails or text messages. Nasty for those involved but perhaps a little over-blown as a threat since as far as I could find the survey doesn’t attempt to determine the severity of the emails.

If you are being bullied offline it wouldn’t be surprising if the same person sent you threatening text messages as well, but I don’t suppose it is any worse than actually being thumped. Being cyberstalked by someone whose identity you don’t know on the other hand can be scary indeed…

According to an article in Psychology Today, the study published 35 years ago that purported to prove that there is a chain of acquaintance only six people long between you and anyone else in the world may not be true. The experiment seems to have been flawed. Then again, thanks to email, increased travel etc it might be true now even if it wasn’t true then…30 approved card commission creditabout credit protection fee cardshome lenders acredittedreturns a1 rating bond creditcard financing mortgage accept creditretail account credit merchant services cardinvestor accrediteage for limit cards credit Map

I am helping the BBC to find English-language radio stations for a radio programme they do called A World In Your Ear. They describe it as “a showcase for the best English language radio on the planet including features, plays, phone-ins, music and comedy shows. A half hour of eavesdropping on the world that reveals a kaleidoscope of voices, sounds and places”.

I am looking particularly for:
1) English language radio stations in Asia and Africa – not all-music or all-news stations but stations with a talk format or which offer drama etc.

2) Radio programmes with a “transport” theme – traffic reports from Greenland, say?

If you know of anything suitable, please contact me directly – or post something in the comments (below). If there is a particular programme on the station which you particularly enjoyed it would help if you could let me know.

Fpr the BBC’s purposes the station doesn’t have to have a website or be streamed over the Internet.

P.S. If you want to catch it , it is broadcast on Fridays 13:30-14:00 (UK time) and Sundays 20:00-20:30 for the next five weeks and streamed from the website live, though for copyright reasons the audiois not archived.203k rehab loanhome ca 0 down loans orovillebudget bush allan sloana loan mirco isamerican savings association loan and stocktonnon-owner loans occupied 100interstate student loans alliedabela loansloan retirement ameriprise accountand helena savings loan american federal

According to a Canadian study reported in New Scientist (by a friend of mine as it happens), it appears smoking marijuana does not have a long-term effect on intelligence. It looks as if British Telecom expects the current limitations on the use of wireless networking for commercial purposes to be lifted. It has announced it wants to build a network of base stations across the country.

Unfortunately, it reportedly plans to target business first and consumers won’t be allowed to connect until 2005.
