EPIC (Electronic Privacy Information Center) has a page on the scary/ludicrous Total Information Awareness project (see my earlier post).

Why ludicrous? Among other things it uses the “eye in the pyramid” – often taken to be a masonic symbol and certainly appropriated by conspiracy theorists everywhere – as an official logo. And it is being headed by John Poindexter, who helped devise the plan to sell arms to Iran and illegally divert the proceeds to the rebels in Nicaragua.

This Salon.com article (no registration required) made me think. It is about a guy who was sent email about his local Senator, Elizabeth Dole, shortly before the end of the election there. The UK Gov’t has pledged at the recent e-summit to get every school onto broadband by 2006. This is rather good but if you are going thereby to ensure every remote village has broadband access anyway, why not find some way to ensure that the bandwidth is also available to other people in the area who are not already served? I’m catching up with iWire, the iSociety’s ever-thought provoking and entertaining weblog and it pointed out a new Google game Steven Johnson invented – Googleshare. Take a concept you think you are associated with and see how many pages you find when you search. Then combine those search terms with your own name and find the (much smaller) number. Divide the second number by the first and that’s your Googleshare of that concept.

It’s a pretty rough and ready measure, but fun to do.
