According to the New York Times, Iraq has as loose a system of gun control as the US – anyone over 25 “of good character” can own a firearm (including AK-47s!) and gun sales are accellerating. The rules date back to the Saddam regime but the US has not tried to change them. How a state can keep the peace without a monopoly on the use of force is beyond me…

  1. It’s interesting that you said “a monopoly on the use of force” rather than on the means of force. In much of the USA the law will grudgingly allow you to arm yourself, so long as you don’t bring yourself to its attention, but throw the book at you if you have the temerity to show your weapon to a mugger.

  2. Ok, my last post got deleted. Look at this video I found on u-tube. The media is usually about fiction, not fact. I can’t believe ABC actually aired something about guns like this.

  3. Well what ABC aired was an opinion piece by their rent-a-conservative. I was intrigued by his assertion that a CDC study showed “popular methods of gun control, such as the Brady Bill, have had little if any effect on crime.” This is not true. Looking at the CDC study (http://www.cdc.gov/MMWR/preview/mmwrhtml/rr5214a2.htm) it concluded simply that, “none of the firearm laws reviewed was found to have sufficient evidence to draw conclusions regarding their effectiveness… A finding of insufficient evidence to determine effectiveness should not be interpreted as evidence of ineffectiveness but rather as an indicator that additional research is needed before an intervention can be evaluated for its effectiveness.”

I am sorry I deleted your previous comment – since it links to a gun store I assumed it was spam.

  4. No spam. I do look for blogs, but I also do my best to contribute. fair enough?

I agree. Nice of them to rent a conservative once in a while though. Mixes it up, since they are bought/owned by libs. The above quote works both ways. Lefties are the most guilty of all. The Brady bunch is the biggest group of hypocrites out there, jumping at anything. Almost all the garbage that comes from their mouths has no factual base. It’s simply scary hype targeted at the uninformed/uneducated.

My previous post. I just wanted to put you in the shoes of the Iraqi who fears every minute of his/her life. Easy to say they shouldn’t have AKs while you’re sitting in your peaceful living room reading a book.
