Solving a non-existent digital divide problem A South African is trying to provide the poor with low-powered surplus PCs. So far, so good, but he is installing a new, more efficient, but proprietary operating system with bundled applications onto them (basically, GeoWorks). I worry that people who are the beneficiaries of these new PCs will be limited in what they can achieve and will have troubles in transferring their skills. I have my doubts about using Linux in developing countries for similar reasons – see my archives for an earlier article and link to discussion.

US police can see your medical records – that’s pretty bad, but what is worse is that it appears they can do so without telling you and without getting permission from a judge… You’d never get away with that sort of thing in Europe.
