I have just found out about Zoe, an email handling application that sounds like it does just what I have been waiting for something to do – it puts my mail into a properly searchable, web accessible database. Instead of using simple keyword searches or remembering where I filed it I should be able to just google for my mail – from anywhere in the world. The software is in an early stage of development, however, and it looks as if it could be a little difficult to get set up for the first time.

Has anyone used it yet? Anyone fancy trying it out? If so, please share your experiences using the comment feature below.

You can read more about it from a user (Jon Udell at O’Reilly) here.

  1. A whole lot of people have put decades of research into making e-mail systems work, which is why we have four rock-solid MTAs (Sendmail, qmail, exim, postfix), and a handful of rock-solid clients.

I’m extremely nervous whenever someone decides to ignore this infrastructure and “roll their own”. The security (and spam) implications of yet-another-mailer are astonishing these days.

Having said that, a web-accessible index for email is cool, but I can do that now with other tools.

Maybe my UNIX bias is showing; this tool is geared towards Mac/Windows, after all.

  2. It is fairly easy for UNIX people to index their email in general ways. But a database that understands the structure of email and presents the results accordingly – I’m not sure that has been done.

I understand your concern about potential safety problems with a new mail client, but I have to say that concern shouldn’t stop genuinely new and useful ideas from emerging. Of course your background is in security, so it’s understandable…

Since Zoe is open source it might end up more secure than existing closed clients, and if it helps to undermine the monoculture of Outlook, which itself encourages viruses to spread surely that is a good thing for safety?
