Thanks to Haddock, I just found a great database of historical London maps including one from 1786 – “15 Miles Round London“.

If you liked that you will probably also like Booth’s famous 1889 map of poverty in London and a map of London in 1856 which includes lots of data about John Snow, the pioneering epidemiologist who stemmed a cholera epidemic.french sex movieshentai movies length fullarchive movie hentaihentai galleries moviemovie holemovies sex homefucking hot moviesmovies free incest Map

After months of winter misery the sun is starting to have noticeable force and the temperature is climbing to around 10 degrees during the day – a little nippy, but bearable. Toronto (where I used to live), meanwhile, still has temperatures that can plunge to -12 degrees during the day.

Sadly, in terms of hours of daylight London appears to be well behind. Thanks to the US Naval Observatory I can see that this year we don’t start to get more sun than Toronto until April 23rd and we start falling behind again on August 20th. Four months of gloriously long days is little compensation for eight months of increasing darkness…

NB – daylight savings time may affect this, but I am not sure in what direction as both countries have it, and (I think) at slightly different times. Also note I am talking about hours of daylight in the evening here – the situation looks better when you count the time of sunrise as well as sunset, but I like to be asleep around sunrise!

The BBC alerted me to the existence of this picture of London from space taken by an astronaut in the International Space Station.

You can get a 3032×2064 pixel version of this from NASA here – though it is a little blurry.

So you see? The ISS is worth keeping!

… when a little snow combined with a fault in a tube train that (for a change) was just ten years old.

Hurray – my borough’s schools are no longer the nation’s worst – Islington is the the fifth-worst borough now and has slipped ahead of Hackney.

I was going to post something about those posters earlier but I was just too slow in getting around to taking a picture. Fortunately, Harvey beat me to it.

The posters are very widespead (I think Transport for London may not be finding it easy to sell ads on their shelters at the moment), and surprisingly they are not intentionally ironic. The reason why they have the rather unfortunate Soviet-style iconography is that they are part of a series of Transport for London posters with a similar style. Of course I wouldn’t disregard the possibility that the design agency used by TfL enjoyed the irony.

For more on the TfL CCTV programme (and more use of the scary London Transport eyes), click here and for a lot of largely outraged comments, check out samizdata.net, a Libertarian weblog.

I take a rather utilitarian perspective on all this CCTV – it doesn’t do as much good at dealing with crime as (for example) better lighting (according to a recent study) but if it makes people feel safer then it is arguably performing a good public service, and there is not much evidence I have seen so far of it being used to oppress the innocent here in the UK. The trend does bear watching, though…2 best casinoa300 polyphonic ringtonescommercial credit receivable accounts insurancebonus up palace casino golden 200sph a460 ringtonecollege life experience accredited creditcasino 22online 22a840 pm ringtone Map

I’ve been doing a little research on second hand books since I became a student.

First off, try searching ABE Books – it covers hundreds of second hand shops around the globe but you can ask it to narrow the search to the UK. Skoob and Unsworths (see below) both use it to index their own collections.

Unsworths

Brunswick Centre – The nearest Underground station is Russell Square on the Piccadilly line. The Brunswick Centre is 50 yards from the tube station, turn right out of the station, cross over the road and head for a large concrete edifice. If you know the Renoir Cinema (recommended), we are in the same complex.
(purportedly the largest second hand academic bookshop in London)

Judd Two Books 82 Marchmont St nr Russell Sq tube 7387 5333 (no website?)

Waterstones 82 Gower Street – one of the largest sources of new academic books in London but also apparently sells used books.

One a similar note, Amazon UK sells used books alongside new ones when you do a search.big of women free movies boobthumbs movies porn freequality movies porn freeporn movies free retrohardcore free sample movieswinger movies freemovie teen samples freetwink clips free moviefree pussy wired moviesdownload movies free xxx
