The Douglas Adams I knew

Well – I didn’t know him very well, alas. We met twice – once when I went to a book signing and once at a Mac-related event. He was a fanatical Mac bigot and I used to work for Mac User magazine in the UK. For a time he had an occaisional column.

What do I remember about him? He was tall, friendly and had a notoriously poor attitude to deadlines. In fact, my favourite Douglas Adams saying was, “What I like most about deadlines is the whizzing sound they make as they go past”.

My exposure to him as a man was all too fleeting but I was delighted by his HHGTTG work and I was saddened to hear of his premature death. Had he lived I’m sure his genius would have brightened the days of millions more people…movies ever scariesttaboo movies incestthai movie tgpthe longest movie yardtop ever movies 10 scariestwife movies masturbatingmovies raimi xxxteen masturbating movies youngamateur sex moviemovie sex animepayment deferred loans alabama student401k loan formulaallan sloanjumbo stated stated 90 loanloss lease allowance for and loancar loan addlinkmortgage loan 100 closing no costsmortgage amortize loan Map

Spam-b-gone! Now that I can return you to my regularly scheduled programming – my weblog is back in action after a several week technology-driven hiatus – I would like to point you to one of the most useful tools I have come across – the Spam Weasel. It is a free Windows program that makes it easy for you to filter out un-wanted spam from your POP3 email inbox. You can set up your own rules and it includes some good ones to start with. Email containing such phrases as “try it for free”, “unique offer” and “work at home” can be painlessly discarded!

FT.com UK Gov’t rules out 3G handout – And a good thing too. Regrettable as it is that the telcos didn’t get their sums right I don’t see why money that could go to hospitals or schools should go instead to bailing them out of trouble!

“So Clippy [Microsoft’s soon-to-be-obsolete interrupting paperclip] shows up at the Pearly Gates. Does he wait in line like everybody else? No. He goes and looks over St. Peter’s shoulder for a few seconds, then says something like “It looks like you’re trying to tabulate this person’s good and bad deeds …” – Thomas G. Digby

Apologies for the seemingly erratic updating of this blog. It is moving from one server to another – a process I thought would be straightforward but which turned out to be a little trickier than I had bargained for. I’ve brought this copy up to date now and soon you will be getting blog.org from an all-new and hopefully greatly improved and reliable location. Douglas Rushkoff I don’t normally have a lot of time for him and he does over-state his case rather, but this time he really has a point. Sites aimed at WAP users are simple text and fast to load and these are virtues that those sites’ owners would do well to remember.

BBC News – Workers lose three hours to net something of a sensationalist study – this is to say they spend more than three hours a week surfing the net, almost half of them admiting to some personal use. But if it is done in break time (and considering that most of them will be putting in unpaid overtime) where is the harm?

The piece notes, “UK employers were five times more likely to reprimand staff for inappropriate use of the internet than in many other European countries.” Ouch!
