Attached as I was to Blogger, the “market leader” of self-publishing weblog software, I have been looking for a way to divide my weblog into categories and allow people to view only those categories that interest them.

Moveable Type, which I am now using, allows this and contains a number of other useful facilities as well. I highly recommend it.

I owe a debt of thanks to my friend Reid Ellis who hosts the site and who has helped a great deal in making the switch-over a smooth one. Do let me know if you like the new look and new capabilities – I call your attention to the “comment” feature just below.

I also encourage you to join my mailing list (at right) – another feature made easier by Moveable Type. This won’t email you every time a new entry is posted but it will allow me to notify you when I add something that I consider particularly interesting.

A funny take from Satirewire on Canada’s navy, which recently seized an oil tanker in the Gulf. Did you know in WWII Canada had a navy second only to the US and Great Britain’s?

Big Mother is watching you… If it can be believed this gadget will make a lot of (fairly wealthy American) parents happy and a few kids rather disgruntled – it is a watch that also acts as a locator and 911 alarm. The idea is that as long as your kid wears the watch you will know where they are thanks to the telephone and GPS networks. I have my doubts about whether it will work in cities – my inexpensive GPS doesn’t work too well in London or Paris for example. An “over-designed” (it relies on Flash) but graphically interesting way to present a history of the Internet It’s only a partial history, since it doesn’t go back further than 1981 but it is a good way to get a quick picture and has lots of external links. The sponsoring company, Novatis, has also produced a similar timeline for computing, starting in 1967.

A heartening tale of how two business models that aren’t supposed to be profitable on the Internet – self-publishing using e-books and virtual community – have turned out to work profitably together for at least one person – a publisher of fantasy books.

It’s the sort of thing I would have said ought to work but in the last few years a lot of things that seemed as if they would work have proven unprofitable. Glad to see this actually does work. It may be that the particular audience of fantasy readers he is addressing is fanatical enough that they represent a special case…

A perceptive review of J.R.R. Tolkien: Author of the Century
by Tom Shippey – it points out some of Tolkein’s skills but also skilfully dissects the authors weaknesses (some of which I remarked on myself after viewing the film). In particular, “If one is to regard The Lord of the Rings as a book for adults, what disturbs is not so much the absence of women, perhaps explicable in an adventure story of this kind, as the absence of desire. In this work that presents itself as the representation of a whole world, there is hardly any awareness that we are sexual beings.”
