Weblog on the Internet and public policy, journalism, virtual community, and more from David Brake, a Canadian academic, consultant and journalist

Last month I sang the praises of tinyurl.com – now I read of a challenger, snipurl (which also takes a long URL and makes it shorter, making it easier to remember and share). This site has all manner of features – you can give a url an easy-to-remember name as you shorten it, you can track how many times it has been accessed, you can even give a URL a password. And it is still as short and convenient as tinyurl was…

  1. Hi David,

Thanks a bunch for mentioning my name. I was quite impressed with SnipURL’s slew of features. I wrote to the guy and here is a list of features he sent to me…quite useful:

    Dear Erick,

Thank you for your kind words. I do not think I am “at loggerheads” with anyone, including tinyURL (which by the way is a very good service). SnipURL is just an honest attempt to provide a useful service to net-savvy folk.

As far as I know, following are some of the detailed features that I believe make SnipURL stand out (please note that I do not intend anything negative against any of the comparable services mentioned, they are all good attempts at making our internet experience richer in some way!)–

    1. IN FOUR LANGUAGES (and more coming soon!)

The website can be viewed in English, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish. Among these languages, we cover at least around 80% of the world if not more.

    2. MORE INTUITIVE URLs

Don’t like URLs like http://snipurl.com/h because they are just some random text? Then you can make http://snipurl.com/digicam_review and post more intuitive URLs.

    3. PROTECTED snipped URLs:

Worried that people can basically guess http://snipurl.com/1 or http://snipurl.com/2 or http://snipurl.com/<some sequence here>? Then you
can “protect” your snippings with a keycode. SO instead of your URL becoming http://snipurl.com/i, it will become http://snipurl.com/i-secret where
    “secret” was your password.

    4. INTUITIVE STATISTICS & SEARCH

A quick registration process gives you access to all the URLs you have snipped in one screen, along with click-through statistics. This is much
better than a password for every URL you shorten! You can also search for the URLs you have snipped by entering keywords that were contained in the
    original link.

    e.g., yahoo bbspot review

    5. SHORTCUT

A spiffy shortcut allows you to add a “bookmarklet” to your browser and
“snip” URLs quickly (for people who do not understand bookmarklets, we have a little visual help: http://snipurl.com/SnipThis.htm).

    6. A PUBLIC STATISTICS PAGE

A public statistics page (http://snipurl.com/else.php) allows you to see the most popular snippings. And of course, search them too. “PROTECTED” URLs are not included in this public view of course.

    7. REALLY SHORT URLs

Oh, the website is fast (unlike some similar ones for e.g.) and the snipped URLs are indeed short. Compare these:

[All of the following point to the same URL]
    http://makeashorterlink.com/?R2F163061
    http://urlizer.com/00/1197/
    http://shorl.com/garudragidryje
    http://shorterlink.com/?XV69KT
    etc..

    http://snipurl.com/i7
    http://snipurl.com/saythetime

    8. REAL REDIRECTS

SnipURL will also let you do “deep snipping”. So if your snipped website is “http://snipurl.com/e” (which points to the website “http://www.copyright.gov”) and you have directories and files below that level, you can access them using “http://snipurl.com/e/carp/index.html” which is actually http://www.copyright.gov/carp/index.html.

Hope some of this is useful and again, thanks a bunch for your support.

    Best regards,
    Shashank Tripathi
