I don’t want to leap into buying a cheap DVD recorder that uses a format that might be come obsolete soon, so I am waiting for something like the Sony RDR-GX7 which can read and write most of them. Unfortunately, according to the page referenced it is due to cost an eye-watering £900, won’t arrive for another two months and allows you to program in a puny eight events?!

Hi, I heard/read that Philips has a recorder out that is compatable with all three formats. About same price as the Sony.
might be worth checking out

You have missed the compatibility issue I am concerned about. I’m not worried about compatibility with DVD players – I am worried about compatibility with DVD recording standards. The Philips machine records in “DVD+RW & DVD+R Format” – but there are other formats – notably DVD-R I think. If those standards turn out to be more popular you *might* not be able to buy blank discs for the player in a few years’ time.
